What is a Practice Firm?The Practice Firm is a virtual workplace. Practice Firms approach local businesses to act as "sponsor" firms. Sponsor firms lend their business models, processes, procedures, products and/or service lines as well as their support which allows the PF to replicate a real workplace, with real time processes. Resident staff members oversee the operations of the Practice Firm, just as a management team in a real company would. Participants are "hired" to fill the various positions in the virtual company. Participants perform the tasks according to the job description and in doing so, learn hands-on how a job and its related set of tasks operate. Where did Practice Firms originate?Some literature suggests that Practice Firms can be traced way back to the 17th century. In more recent history, the Practice Firm concept was first applied in Germany in 1960. When did Practice Firms come to Canada? How many Practice Firms are in Canada?Canada opened its first Practice Firm in 1995 and Call Edge - Avantage Appel is one of 42 Practice Firms currently operating in Canada. Who spearheaded the new Practice Firm "Call Edge - Avantage Appel"?Call Edge is a joint initiative of Canadore College and Collège Boréal. Who provides the funding for Practice Firms?Canadian Practice Firms, are part of The Canadian Practice Firm Network and are funded by Employment Ontario and by Emploi-Québec in their respective provinces. How do you qualify to start in a Practice Firm?The criteria to participate in a Practice Firm are: How long can you stay at a Practice Firm?Participants may stay up to 12 weeks in total.
